A New Year’s Kitchen Makeover

January 11th, 2012

In our last post, talked about following through on giving your home a facelift for the New Year by getting its exterior painted. But if you can’t afford to repaint the outside of your home, perhaps you should consider giving just ONE of the rooms inside your house a facelift. Sometimes, by just painting a piece of furniture a different color, this can give the room a whole new look. We specialize in painting cabinets, and it’s amazing what fresh color on all your doors and drawers can do for your kitchen.

Research has shown that the kitchen is one of the favorite parts of the house for many women. Perhaps you like to prepare meals for the ones that you love here. Indeed, many of us express our love through cooking. When you spend so much important time in the kitchen, it’s necessary to keep it looking in top-notch shape. What if the kitchen needs a new look but you can’t afford new cabinets? Let us, your Cincinnati painters, give them some fresh color.

Furthermore, did you know that we guarantee our Cincinnati painting work? In some houses, it’s obvious that the previous painter slapped on some paint to get a paycheck and left as quickly as they could. We’re not in the business of tearing other people’s businesses down, so we won’t mention any names; however, we are in the business of providing a reasonably-priced, fresh new look that you can count on.

A New Look for a New Year

January 9th, 2012

With the New Year come many New Year’s resolutions. What are yours? Perhaps you have been thinking for some time about giving your house a facelift. Or perhaps you are trying to sell your house. In either case, an easy way to improve the look of your house without breaking the bank is to have the exterior of your house painted. Getting rid of fading or peeling paint, adding a new splash of color and drawing attention to unique details are all possible with a few coats of durable and high quality primer and paint. With the right contractor for the job, you can sell that home in no time!

For your new paint job, you’ll need to select more than one color. Most homes have at least three or more colors which bring out the unique features of each house. The house itself has one color with differing shades of the same color or a different color as an accent on the trim, railings, columns, window sashes, or doors.  Stone, brick, and vinyl windows are all static, so keep this in mind when selecting a paint color, because the paint will look different next to these features.

Greenway Painting, your best Cincinnati painting contractors, can also help you select the colors that will best suit your home and your tastes. We also have all of the necessary tools, so there’s no reason to worry about that. For this New Year’s resolution, count on us to give your house that facelift you desire so that you will have that “awe factor” when your friends and family walk in. Oh, and don’t forget to resolve to spend a little more time with those family and friends.

Painting Your Home’s Vinyl Siding

January 6th, 2012

Starting in the 70s, vinyl siding grew in popularity, mainly because of its low maintenance needs. Many beautiful old homes lost their unique exteriors as they were covered with this modern siding material. On top of that, many people found that it wasn’t as great as it was made out to be. Not only did it sometimes warp and bubble because of extreme weather and heat, it also got to look rather drab. And what if your house has two types of siding? Say one part was wood, the other vinyl. The wood needs to be repainted, but you have to keep painting it the same color because of the vinyl. You weren’t supposed to paint vinyl siding, so you were pretty much stuck with the original color, if you didn’t want to remove it.

But guess what? Advances in paint technology mean that this is no longer the case. You CAN paint the exterior of your vinyl-sided home. Major paint brands now offer paints specifically formulated for vinyl siding. These paints adhere well to the vinyl and won’t bubble or warp the way most exterior paints would. These paints are so good, many brands even offer a warranty on them as long as you follow the instructions on the cans.

Still, painting vinyl siding can be a bit tricky. Just like for any paint job, you need to make sure you prep the surface first. That means applying quite a bit of elbow grease and washing the house with soap and water by hand. You can’t really trust to a power washer, because it’s not guaranteed to get off all the dirt and grime. Plus, it can force water under the siding, which will prevent the paint from going on correctly. You’ll also need to remove any mildew with special cleaners. Then you need to pick your paint color carefully. If a color is too dark, it will absorb more heat from the sun and can cause damage to the siding.

Considering the possible damage if you do the paint job incorrectly, it just makes sense to hire a professional house painter to do the job. GreenWay Painting can handle ALL your Cincinnati exterior house painting needs. We know how to do the job right the first time, whether it’s painting vinyl siding or staining your deck.

Snow Removal Services

January 4th, 2012

Although so far the weather’s been rather mild for the holidays, it’d be a very unusual year when the tri-state area didn’t get ANY snow. Big snowfalls are fun and the delight of many a child when school is cancelled. However, it can be the curse of many a homeowner. In order to make it to work on time after a big snowfall, it is imperative to clean the snow out of your driveway to even get to the road. Many of us are able to shovel our own driveways, but this can become a hassle when snow is consistently falling and you have more important things to do.

Did you know that you can set up a recurring snow removal service with Greenway Painting? As mentioned earlier, we offer several services in addition to Cincinnati painting. Our snow removal services are reasonably priced and will save you the headache of constantly shoveling snow from your driveway and the sidewalks in front of your house.

Also, what if you own multiple rental properties? If you set up a snow removal service with Greenway Painting, we will come out and remove the snow from all of the rental properties that you specify. That way, you will not have to worry, and your renters will be satisfied.

Christmas Light Removal Services

January 2nd, 2012

So it’s about that time of year when most of us take down our outdoor Christmas lights. Christmas lights can be an expensive investment. In order to ensure that they last as long as possible and continue to shine for many years to come, it’s best to remove and store them every year. Removing Christmas light strands can be a bit of a challenge, especially if there’s snow or ice involved.

Removing Christmas lights can be a difficult process, and the possibility of hurting yourself is high. If the lights are placed up high, it’s necessary to use a ladder to remove them. If you installed Christmas lights near the rooftop of your house, you probably had to purchase clips to hold the lights. When removing the lights, it is necessary to remove the strand from each clip, and not to pull or tear at the strand to try and pull them out of all the clips at once. Otherwise you risk breaking the clips, or even damaging the lights themselves.

Instead of spending all day removing Christmas lights, wouldn’t you rather have someone remove them for you? We here at Greenway Painting would love to take away this hassle so you have more time to spend with your family and friends. Trust Greenway Paint, your local NKY painters, with your Christmas light needs, as well.

The Hidden Costs of DIY

December 30th, 2011

So you think you’re ready to repaint the exterior of your house on your own. After all, painting’s a simple job, right? Why pay someone else to do something you can handle yourself? Unfortunately, it’s just not that simple. While anyone with a paintbrush, some paint and a ladder might be able to slap a coat of paint on your home, there’s small chance that anyone that’s not a professional will do the job well. And when it comes to your home, this isn’t something you should leave to chance.

Of course WE’D say that, right? After all, we are professional painters. But please don’t write this off as simply self-serving. In the end, trying to paint your house yourself is likely to cost you more in the long run than hiring someone to do it right the first time. So what are some of the reasons why you should hire a professional painter? We’ll just give you a few.

A professional painter already has all of the tools and materials necessary to the job. Caulking, sealants, spackle, wood filler, dust masks, eye protection, chemical cleaners, drop cloths, ladders, expensive brushes…. That’s not even an exhaustive list of the things you’d need to purchase or borrow in order to paint your home yourself. Never mind the cost of the paint!

A professional painter knows how to properly prep your house and will catch things you’d miss. Your home needs to be cleaned thoroughly before the paint will adhere correctly. Windows, cracks and other spaces need to be caulked, and if there’s any rotten wood or structural damage to your home, it will need to be fixed before the paint goes on. If the fixes aren’t done, you could end up dealing with something much worse than a bad paint job. Then any areas that you don’t want painted need to be masked off and you need to protect your lawn, walkways, plants and other areas from stray paint with drop cloths or specialty coverings.

A professional painter knows how to do the job safely. Did you notice the safety equipment we listed in the materials you’d need to buy? Believe it or not, you can get seriously hurt if you don’t know what you’re doing. Paint in your eyes is the least of your worries. You could fall from an improperly placed ladder or slip in wet paint. Also, many of the chemicals you’ll need to clean your home are harmful to breathe in, as is the dust if you don’t have a quality dust mask on.

If those reasons aren’t enough, think about the time that you’ll have to spend painting. This isn’t a quick weekend project. Who’s paying for the hours that YOU will have to put in if someone else doesn’t do the job for you? That’s time taken away from work and family.

So please, don’t try to paint your home yourself. Hire a professional cincinnati exterior house painting company like GreenWay to do the job right!

Choosing a Color Scheme for Interior Painting

December 28th, 2011

As we mentioned before, it can be difficult to choose paint for each room. There are so many different colors to choose, if only choosing a color palette for your interior was that easy.  In his book Color Therapy at Home: Real Life Solutions for Adding Color to Your Life, Mark McCauley, offers eight tips to help you discover your color preferences and take on white walls.

The first tip that he mentions is choosing a color scheme from the largest pattern that is available within the space.  This could be a piece of artwork or a rug. This color scheme is what you will use to decorate the most important areas of the house. This includes the entry way, the living room, and the dining room.  To find the accent colors in less trafficked areas of the house, choose a color from the same color scheme and tone it down.  For example, if you want red in the main entry way of your house, you can use burgundy, let’s say, in the study.

Anything can be a source of inspiration for your color palette, however one source in particular may surprise you–your own clothes.  If you don’t look good in red, it may not be a good idea to use this within your color palette.  Usually analogous colors, or colors that are next to each other on the color wheel, work well together. If you are trying to create a relaxing environment for a bedroom, it may be best to use this color scheme.

We hope that these tips help you to choose your own color palette.  Here at GreenWay Painting, we want to help you create the atmosphere that you are trying to achieve.  If you would like to create a relaxing atmosphere, we will do that. If you are leaning towards more bold colors and would like to make a statement, we will also do that. We have 13 (is this correct?) years of experience, and we will deliver.

Keepin’ It Green with Low-VOC Paints

December 27th, 2011

There’s a reason we’re called GreenWay Painting. We care about keeping the Earth a healthy, livable planet. That’s why we use green (that is, environmentally friendly) paints. We all share this beautiful blue planet, and we need to treat it well if we want to continue to enjoy it. That means that every individual and organization needs to do its part to keep the planet healthy.

Low-VOC paints are just one of the ways that GreenWay does our best to love the Earth. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are chemicals emitted as gases by many household products, including traditional paints. These compounds contribute to the creation of smog and bad ozone–two things very bad for our environment.

On top of their environmental effect, paints high in VOCs can wreak havoc on your family’s health. The EPA has found that pollution levels from these compounds can be 2 to 5 times higher inside homes than outside. Too much exposure to VOCs can present extreme health risks.

For these reasons, we at GreenWay use low-VOC paints to reduce the impact on both the environment and your family. Added bonus? Those VOCs are also largely responsible for that paint smell that so many people dislike, as well as associated headaches. You can cut all that out by going with GreenWay and low-VOC paint.

Some Small Painting Projects for Quick Curb Appeal

December 22nd, 2011

So you want to sell your home as soon as possible, and are looking for ways to quickly improve its curb appeal. Exterior house painting offers you a great option, and one call to GreenWay, your trusted local Northern Kentucky painters, will have a professional team on hand quickly. We’ll do a fantastic job and get it done in the time frame agreed on.

But what if you don’t have the time or money to get your entire house painted? Well, there are a few smaller projects that can provide you with some quicker improvement to your house’s curb appeal. Consider getting just the trim done, or perhaps the doors, windows and shutters. A little paint goes a long way, though of course it won’t get you quite the effect of a new paint job on your entire home.

Whatever you can do to freshen up the outside of your home will give you a better chance of selling it quickly. The economy being what it is, buyers have plenty of homes to choose from. If the speed of your sale is important, it just makes good sense to put on a new coat of paint and improve your odds.
